Dear Lord and Father of Mankind

在2005年英國廣播公司舉行的一項全國最喜愛的詩歌民意調查中，“Dear Lord and Father of Mankind"就被選排名第二。而第一位，也是華人教會很熟悉的“How Great Thou Art" （中文翻譯：〈祢真偉大〉）。

親愛的主，人類的父，恕我愚昧頑梗，重新賜我正直心靈，

這首歌摘自作詩人蔚提爾在1872年所寫的一首長詩「索麻汁的釀造」（The Brewing of Soma）。全詩共17節，每節5行。

「索麻汁的釀造」前11節，描述飲汁後的興奮與騷動。傳說索麻汁是印度的祭司用牛奶與蜜釀造而成，喝後人會迷幻與眾神合一，狂歌歡舞。後6節詩（即本詩歌－－英文版所摘錄的6節歌詞）是強烈的對比，頌讚寧靜的與神靈交。

當時有些基督徒認為喝些祭壇上留下酒，可以讓他們與神更親近。他們相信透過追求亢奮的屬靈經歷，才能與神交通。但作詞人蔚提爾意在破除這迷信，他認為祗有在寧靜中才能與神親密的交通，因為在喧嘩時，聽不到神的聲音。這首長詩的寓意是：在當今的世代中，人們追逐名利，世俗歡樂，而不留片刻沉思默想自己與神的關係。

今天的基督徒肯定不會喝蘇麻，大概也不會追喝聖餐的杯；但我們有沒有在安靜中親近神？聚會熱鬧，多人不代表甚麼……只願我們聽到主寧靜微聲！

「耶和華說：你出來站在山上，在我面前。那時耶和華從那裡經過，在他面前有烈風大作，崩山碎石，耶和華卻不在風中；風後地震，耶和華卻不在其中；地震後有火，耶和華也不在火中；火後有微小的聲音。」神的聲音總是微小。神有幾多次是像天開了大大聲說？看聖經就知。
